Alan and Jo coached my daughter, Louise, through her teenage years.  He was a demanding coach but she always felt he wanted the best for his players, was proud of them and would stand up for them against anyone.  And of course, there was his really really silly sense of humour.

He was a man who coached tennis because he absolutely loved doing it.  It always amused me when he saw recreational players on a court adjacent to his squad.  He just COULD NOT resist wandering over and offering coaching tips - wanted or not!!
