A hole in one

Probably ten years ago now I turned up Crews Hill golf course for a Saturday morning 9 holes with the 'old boys' as I called them. Alan's regular fourball with Keith Stevens, John Testa and Peter Jones was missing a man sometimes and I was sometimes invited to join them to make up the numbers. Then of course poor old Peter died and I was lucky enough to be asked to take his place, not that I did of course as who could replace Peter! Anyway, Alan took me under his wing and entertained me with his life stories, his golf tips and his wonderful sense of humour. This particular Saturday morning we strolled down to the 10th tee where we would start if the first tee was busy, which it usually was. Not the easiest hole to start on as those of you who know it will understand. Alan stepped up and, after a couple of practice swings, took his shot. I was standing behind him and you could tell it was a good shot as it sailed through the air, but you never know at the 10th hole because of the brook in front of the green. Alan's shot cleared the brook, bounced once and dropped in the hole! We danced around celebrating like a bunch of teenagers! A fantastic moment in any golfers life and Alan thoroughly enjoyed the moment.....for quite a few months if I remember rightly! He did not stop smiling for weeks and we all know how wonderful that smile of his was! Last Sunday I very nearly repeated the feat on that same hole. My first thought was that Alan was looking down on me saying "not as good as my one Gibbo" with a big smile on his face! Alan, everyone who knew you will miss you. What a character you were. You were so generous with your time and your knowledge. Thank you for letting me join in your life. I loved being with you! RIP my friend. Gibbo
